Understanding Aqiqah

According to Islamic tradition, the recommended number of animals to be slaughtered for Aqiqah is:

• For a baby boy – Two goats (or two sheep)

• For a baby girl – One goat (or one sheep)

However, if a family is financially unable to offer two goats for a boy, it is permissible to offer just one. The most important aspect is the sincerity of the act and the fulfillment of the Sunnah.

The Fiqh ruling for Aqiqah according to the majority of scholars, including those from the Shafi’i, Maliki, and Hanbali schools, consider Aqiqah as a Sunnah Mu’akkadah (highly encouraged but not obligatory). 

It is a recommended act that parents perform for their newborn as a sign of gratitude to Allah. The preferred time to perform Aqiqah is on the 7th day after the child's birth. If not possible, it can be done on the 14th or 21st day, or anytime later when the parents can afford it. Aqiqah can be performed all year round and is not restricted to the month of Zulhijjah.
